For more than 2000
years,
this area has been the site of ancient east-west trade routes
collectively known as the Silk Road. Not a single road, but
rather a fragile network of intercontinental caravan tracks that
traversed some of the highest mountains and harshest deserts on
earth. Ancient Islamic architecture and culture live on
almost unchanged in this region at the crossroads of the Old
World's largest trading route, the Great Silk Road. This
land of 1001 Nights, Central Asia, is a vast arena of desert,
steppe and knotted mountain ranges.
Since
its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Uzbekistan has
welcomed travelers to its ancient Silk Road cities. Centuries
before Europe blossomed, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva were world
centers of art and architecture, science and commerce, religion
and politics. To visit these cities today is to walk in the
footsteps of great men, holy men and madmen alike!
Tashkent is the
gateway to Uzbekistan, but Samarkand holds its greatest
treasures. In the 14th century, Tamerlane made Samarkand
the capital of his empire - the largest ever conquered by a
single ruler.
On this classic
journey to the famous Silk Road oases of Tashkent, Samarkand,
Bukhara and Khiva, you will walk the markets and shop the old
covered bazaars where traders still offer their wares in a
tradition little changed in 2000 years. You'll see and
hear the Mosques, minarets, and madrasas, each filled with
history, symmetry, and sacred balance. You'll experience
all the color of the ancient Uzbekistan and marvel in the bustle
of its emerging modern tempo.
This will be a
brilliant introduction to the heart of Central Asia with time to
really explore its ancient cities and timeless mysteries.
You will be a novelty for your hosts, and Central Asia will,
most of all, give you the feeling that you are seeing and
experiencing something entirely new, a sensation rare in travel
these days, and to be savored for a life time.
